DuPont StainmasterDuPont Stainmaster®, introduced in 1986, was a breakthrough in carpet protection. Previous soil treatments (Teflon®, Scotchgard®) simply provided a temporary shield, which allowed wet stains to bead on the surface. Stainmaster was the first stain treatment, which prevented many stains from penetrating into carpet dye sites. While no carpet is completely stain-proof, this new treatment resisted many acid-based food stains. Acid-based Products like Kool-Aid® were notorious for causing permanent carpet stains, but this new treatment actually prevented these carpet stains from occurring. Stainmaster was a very clever idea, but its chemical basis is fairly simple. Carpet fibers have tiny dye sites (holes) which allow carpet dyes to penetrate the fiber. These dye sites have positive (+) electrical charges. Acid-based dyes, which are used to dye carpet, have negative (-) electrical charges. When carpet is dyed, the negatively-charged dyes are attracted to positively-charged dye sites and the dye sites are neutralized. This neutralization prevents any further dye from entering these dye sites. DuPont learned that not all dye sites are neutralized during the dye process. To neutralize these remaining dye sites, they packaged a clear, colorless dye, Stamped it with the name StainMaster® and the rest is history.
